Friedrich-Mielke-Institut für Scalalogie | Institute for Scalalogy

The Institute for Scalalogy, named after the pioneer of Scalology, Professor Dr.-Ing. Friedrich Mielke, is a scientific institution of the OTH Regensburg. It is dedicated to research and teaching in all areas related to steps and stairs, whether technical, artistic, literary, philosophical, historical or spiritual.

The collection of the "Arbeitsstelle für Treppenforschung" (Centre for Stair Research) in Konstein, founded in 1980 by Prof. Dr.- Ing. Friedrich Mielke, was handed over to the newly founded "Friedrich-Mielke-Institut für Scalaogie" at the OTH Regensburg on 18 June 2012.

scalalogy: research on staircases

Scalalogy is the science of the features and the effects of staircases, or in short, "the knowledge of stairs". It has evolved from various forms of stair research, from virtual stair construction and from the history of architecture and art. The way in which differences in height are overcome through the use of stepped constructions is the subject of these studies. Building owners and tenants, architects and craftsmen, stair manufacturers and users, creative artists and art historians, curators and restorers, physiologists and psychologists, anthropologists and medics, teachers and students will all benefit from its findings.
