Friedrich-Mielke-Institut für Scalalogie | Institute for Scalalogy

The Institute for Scalalogy is a scientific institution of the OTH Regensburg, named after Professor Dr.-Ing. Friedrich Mielke the founder of scalalogy. The Institute conducts research and provides education in all areas related to steps and stairs, whether technical, artistic, literary, philosophical, material, historical or spiritual.

The Institute aims to systematically document, typologically classify and precisely name staircases and their individual parts. As an staircase research institution, the Institute is dedicated to analysing stairs and steps with regard to technical, technological, design and social issues and makes its knowledge collection available to all researchers.

scalalogy: research on staircases

Scalalogy is the science of the features and the effects of staircases, or in short, "the knowledge of stairs". It has evolved from various forms of stair research, from virtual stair construction and from the history of architecture and art. The way in which differences in height are overcome through the use of stepped constructions is the subject of these studies. Building owners and tenants, architects and craftsmen, stair manufacturers and users, creative artists and art historians, curators and restorers, physiologists and psychologists, anthropologists and medics, teachers and students will all benefit from its findings.
